"Pareil" anaphorique : une reprise à forte charge appréciative.

International audienceThis paper deals with the type of anaphoric process associated with the adnominal adjective pareil in sentences such as Je ne m'attendais pas à un scandale pareil. It aims at specifying the kind of identity relationship expressed by this adjective. The data suggest that pareil does not entail a strict identity with the antecedent but rather involves a reference to the type associated with the antecedent. The adjective pareil also turns out to involve appraisal, as it indicates that the subject considers the referent as outstanding. It is also concluded that the prenominal vs. postnominal position of the adjective has a clear semantic impact. When the adjective is used prenominally (un pareil N), there is a focus on the categorization of the antecedent, hence the predicative content of the N is highlighted, and the article can be omitted. When the adjective is used postnominally (un N pareil) however, the focus is on the particular characteristics of the antecedent.Ce travail porte sur le fonctionnement anaphorique de pareil adnominal dans des phrases du type : Je ne m'attendais pas à un scandale pareil. Le but est de préciser la nature de l'identité assertée par l'adjectif. Les faits étudiés montrent que l'anaphore réalisée par pareil n'est jamais coréférentielle et qu'elle renvoie à un type construit discursivement à partir du référent de l'antécédent. Il en ressort aussi que pareil comporte une forte charge appréciative, ce renvoi intensionnel impliquant toujours le point de vue du sujet pensant face à un référent doté à ses yeux de caractéristiques remarquables. En ce qui concerne l'impact sémantique du placement de l'adjectif dans le SN, l'analyse proposée montre que un pareil N focalise la catégorisation de l'antécédent – d'où une mise en relief du contenu prédicatif du N et la possibilité d'omettre l'article devant pareil antéposé, tandis que un N pareil focalise avant tout les caractéristiques particulières attachées au référent de l'antécédent
